Anti-bullying: The Role of the Parent and Teachers!

Posted on 1/21/2011 by Charles

Bullying, both verbal and physical, can make a child's life miserable! Some of the side effects of a child being bullied are declining grades, more physical ailments, decrease in social activity, and increased temperamental violence. Despite the zero tolerance policy, school violence is on the rise. Parents and teachers can play an instrumental part in deescalating violence in our schools.

We teach our students at Innovative Martial Arts Academy to tell both their parents and teachers when someone is bullying them, both verbal and physical. Parents must listen to their children when they tell you about someone who is bullying them and take it seriously. You must get away from the mind set, that this is just how children are and accept it. Remember, that if bullying was done to you in the adult world, the bully would be arrested and taken to jail for assault. You must make phone calls to the school and ensure the situation is resolved.

Teachers need to take action immediately when a bullying issue is brought to your attention. You must do everything possible to ensure the safety and well-being of the child being bullied. If the situation is not resolved, especially if the child has done their part and told someone, it creates feelings of helplessness.

Not every bullying situation will turn into what happened in Columbine, but they DO in fact, happen. Here is an article linking bullying to what was called the Columbine Massacre:
