How to Perfect Your Training Routine

Consistency is key in martial arts, but with busy schedules, it’s easy to fall out of rhythm. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned student, creating a reliable training routine can elevate your progress, boost motivation, and keep your skills sharp. At Innovative Martial Arts Academy, we coach students of all ages on how to train smart and stay committed. Here are five proven tips to help you perfect your martial arts routine!

1. Set a Realistic Weekly Schedule

Start by determining how many days per week you can train. Even two to three consistent sessions can build strong habits. Mark your training times on a calendar to build accountability. Consider varying the times if your schedule fluctuates weekly. Set reminders on your phone or use a scheduling app to stay on track. Remember to include travel time to and from the dojo in your schedule. If you can’t make it to the dojo, consider shorter at-home practice sessions.

2. Focus on One Skill Per Session

Instead of trying to master everything at once, break your practice into focus areas: forms, footwork, balance, flexibility. This makes training more efficient and less overwhelming. For example, one session could be entirely dedicated to perfecting a specific kata, while another could focus on partner drills. Research and learn about the history and practical applications of the skill you’re focusing on, this adds depth to your practice and makes it a more complete learning experience.

3. Use Video Feedback

Record yourself practicing techniques. Watching your movements can help you catch small mistakes, refine form, and celebrate progress over time. Watch your videos with a critical eye, looking for areas of improvement. Compare your videos to demonstrations by your instructors or masters. Share videos with trusted training partners or instructors for feedback. Save videos to track your progress over weeks and months.

4. Incorporate Strength and Flexibility Work

Support your martial arts with strength training and stretching. Core exercises, leg work, and yoga are great additions that improve your overall ability and reduce injury risk. Dedicate specific days for strength training and others for flexibility exercises. Explore different types of stretches, like dynamic and static stretches. Consider consulting a fitness professional to develop a personalized strength and flexibility plan. Remember to warm up before stretching or strength training to prevent injuries.

5. Track Your Progress and Celebrate Wins

Keep a training journal to record what you practiced, how you felt, and what goals you hit. This sounds silly and useless, but celebrating small wins helps you stay motivated. Include details like specific techniques practiced, the number of repetitions, and any challenges you faced. Note how you feel physically and mentally after each training session. Set short-term and long-term goals and track your progress towards them. Review your journal regularly to see how far you’ve come.

Elevate Your Training

Remember, perfection isn’t about avoiding mistakes, it’s about building consistent habits that create progress over time. With structure, support, and passion, you can take your martial arts journey to the next level.

Our Reviews

Great school with wonderful teachers. My daughter has a great time learning and everyone is friendly. There is even an adult class that allowed me to try to see if I liked it and everyone was very patient with me. I am thankful to have my daughter be a part of the Innovative Martial Arts Academy in Wake Forest and know she is benefiting from it in more than one way. It amazes me how fast she is learning and how hard she is trying. They have her trying to develop at her fullest with her mind, body, and spirit. I would recommend this school to anyone interested in martial arts.

This place is great! Charles and his team have fantastic programs for kids. When we started our 3.5 year old son, I didn’t know what to expect. He quickly adapted to the classes and now loves going. Our 2 year old son loves watching and will start as well as soon as he turns 3. Innovative Martial arts also hosted their birthday parties. The kids had a blast doing different activities throughout the birthday party. Can’t say enough good things about this place, and what they teach!

Wonderful place for not only skill development but also personal development. Owner and instructors genuinely get to know students and families and care about them. The lessons learned will provide character growth as well as martial art skills. The owner is also a long time student of many different martial arts, he didn’t just buy a franchise, and tries very hard to live what he teaches the students. Proud to have been in this dojo family for 6+ years and proud of the friendships we have made there!
