How Martial Arts Builds Character in Kids

5 Character Traits That Your Child Will Develop

As a parent, you want to raise your kids to be the best versions of themselves. You want your child

  • to be respectful
  • to be a hard worker
  • to make good choices

Building character in your children is a critical part of their development.

There are many ways to build character in kids and one excellent way is to have your child involved in martial arts. Martial arts is not just a physical activity that will help your child develop physically, it is also an activity that focuses on instilling values and teaching lessons that will help your child develop character.

Respect

One of the first lessons your child will learn in a martial arts class is how to address their teacher, or as we say, “Sensei.” In martial arts, the expectation is to treat everyone with respect, this means the teacher as well as fellow students.

Focus

In order to practice Martial Arts, every student must learn how to focus. It is important to be able to listen to the instructor and follow directions. Listening and paying attention are not only important for learning a new skill, they are also important in learning how to be safe while performing it. Through practicing martial arts, your child will learn how to focus and listen.

Confidence

Building confidence in children does not come from praise alone. We can tell our children that they are wonderful and great, but there has to be something that comes from within. They need to see for themselves. One of the best ways for a child to develop confidence is goal-setting. Having a child strive towards a particular goal and meeting that goal will fill them with self-confidence.

A key part of martial arts is goal-setting and working to meet that goal. As your child progresses through their classes, they will be working towards achieving different belts. Each time they reach their goal, we have a ceremony where your child will be given their next belt and is met with applause from their fellow classmates. There is nothing better than seeing a child reach their goal and beam with confidence — a rewarding smile on their face.

Discipline

Goal-setting also leads to discipline. In order to accomplish their goals and advance to the next level, your child will develop discipline. Attending martial arts classes weekly and striving to improve their skills gives your child regular opportunities to learn about and practice discipline. Discipline is one of Martial Arts’ core values; it will serve your child well in all their endeavors.

Perseverance

When it comes to working towards a goal, there may be setbacks. Sometimes things do not always come so easily. Children might see that as they progress in martial arts, they may struggle at times with a particular skill. They will learn that this is normal and that it happens to everyone!

One of the best things that results from overcoming a setback or struggle is the belief that the child can persevere. Once that connection is made, children will work hard, knowing that they will be able to persevere and ultimately meet their goals. This helps them develop the attitude of never giving up, and that quitting is not an option!

This place is great! Charles and his team have fantastic programs for kids. When we started our 3.5 year old son, I didn’t know what to expect. He quickly adapted to the classes and now loves going. Our 2 year old son loves watching and will start as well as soon as he turns 3. Innovative Martial arts also hosted their birthday parties. The kids had a blast doing different activities throughout the birthday party. Can’t say enough good things about this place, and what they teach!

Innovative Martial Arts Academy (IMAA) is the best place to take martial arts. Charles Falk, the owner, and his staff do a great job teaching martial arts to the students and teaching each student to be confident and disciplined. My son has been with IMAA for eight years - he has earned one black belt and is working on his second.

Great school with wonderful teachers. My daughter has a great time learning and everyone is friendly. There is even an adult class that allowed me to try to see if I liked it and everyone was very patient with me. I am thankful to have my daughter be a part of the Innovative Martial Arts Academy in Wake Forest and know she is benefiting from it in more than one way. It amazes me how fast she is learning and how hard she is trying. They have her trying to develop at her fullest with her mind, body, and spirit. I would recommend this school to anyone interested in martial arts.

Wonderful place for not only skill development but also personal development. Owner and instructors genuinely get to know students and families and care about them. The lessons learned will provide character growth as well as martial art skills. The owner is also a long time student of many different martial arts, he didn't just buy a franchise, and tries very hard to live what he teaches the students. Proud to have been in this dojo family for 6+ years and proud of the friendships we have made there!
